One of his earliest known games, RPG Max, was released in 2002, although his first official game was released in the early 2000s. He made Christian Media animations for Hope Animations.
Cawthon uploaded the first part of an eight-part series based on John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress to his YouTube channel on March 19, 2007; it was released as an entire-length film on DVD two years prior. Cawthon developed a Series of games after the release of The Pilgrim’s Progress; these games would include Sit N’ Survive, Chipper and Sons Lumber Co., and The Desolate Hope.
Some of these games were submitted to Steam Greenlight. The Desolate Hope was a bit of success. At the same time, other games, especially Chipper and Sons Lumber Co., received heavy hostile critics from prominent reviewers for having characters that moved and interacted with each other like animatronic machines.
This discouraged Cawthon, and he almost gave up game development altogether. Still, he would eventually use the critic’s words(animatronic-like characters). This sparked the development of Five Nights at Freddy’s, which was released on August 8, 2014, and sold at $4.99.

Cawthon posted a message on his website on June 16, 2021, announcing his retirement from the gaming development. They reported that a successor would be appointed to ensure that the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise would still be in play, while he would play a lesser role in the game’s development while still in retirement.
It remained unknown if he would retain the Five Nights at Freddy’s intellectual property or make any other creative decisions for the franchise. As stated to him, his retirement was to have more quality time with his family and especially with his children. Also, he expressed profound gratitude to his supporters and followers for their repeated support throughout his career.
In April 2015, Warner Bros. Pictures announced that it had acquired the rights to adapt the Five Nights at Freddy’s series to film. Seth Grahame Smith, David Katzenberg, and Roy Lee were set to produce the film. To make an insane, scary, and weirdly adorable movie, Grahame Smith stated that they would collaborate with Cawthon to make the show even more promising.
Following problems within the movie industry as a whole in January 2017, Cawthon announced that this had caused significant setbacks and delays in the movie production, which led to the show going back to square one. Still, he promised to be involved with the movie this time to make something to excite the fanbase.
Cawthon tweeted a photo at Blumhouse Production in March 2017; this would suggest that the film now has a new production company. Jason Blum confirmed this news in May 2017, stating that he was excited and working closely with Cawthon on the adaptation.
Chris Columbus tweeted on Blumhouse Production Twitter handle to be working on the film as a director and producing it with Blum and Cawthon. Scott Cawthon posted on a steam forum in August 2018 that the film will be based on the first game and also that if in the future there’s a second and third film, they will be based on the second and third game, respectively.
The movie was further delayed due to the film script being scrapped; this would lead to Cawthon additionally announcing that the film does have a finished screenplay and will resume filming in spring 2021. Jason Blum stated in September 2021 that the film was still having script issues and that Chris Columbus wasn’t any longer the project director.
On the philanthropical side of his public image, Cawthon announced that he would be making a game mainly for a fundraising event for St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The game would be hosted by MatPat, who would play the game with YouTubers, namely Dawko and Markiplier, on a live stream. Freddy in Space 2 was the game used for fundraising and was released on December 3 same year. After the fundraising event was over, Cawthon raised and donated $500,000 to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
